RAK Hospital has unveiled the UAE’s inaugural Y-DNA ancestry test, enhancing its comprehensive genetic testing services. This innovative addition allows men to trace their paternal lineage with unprecedented precision, offering insights into ancestral migration patterns and ethnic origins.
The Y-DNA test utilizes Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technology, combined with proprietary bioinformatics developed at RAK Hospital’s NGS Laboratory in Ras Al Khaimah. This advanced approach enables the identification of Y-Haplogroups, which are passed exclusively from father to son, providing a detailed map of paternal ancestry over thousands of years.
“Understanding one’s paternal lineage offers a profound connection to ancestral heritage,” said Dr. Hafiz Ahmad, Head of the Molecular Division at RAK Hospital. “Our Y-DNA test empowers individuals to explore their genetic roots with scientific accuracy and personal relevance.”
The test is complementary for all individuals opting for standard Ancestry Testing, requiring only a simple saliva sample. Results are delivered within four to six weeks via email or the hospital’s mobile app, accompanied by a real-time interactive migration map that traces the journey of ancestors across continents.

Approximately 34% of UAE males tested at RAK Hospital belong to Haplogroup J1-P58, a lineage prevalent in the Arabian Peninsula. Other identified haplogroups include J2, E1, and R1, reflecting the UAE’s rich history as a crossroads of trade and cultural exchange.
