Alternate pain treatment for body pain without steroids

Thousands of patients in the UAE suffer the misery of back and neck pain at some point in their lives.  Chronic pain can be a devastating condition for sufferers, which can impact just about all areas of their life, in many cases preventing them from being able to work.

Dr Mohamed El Toukhy, Consultant in interventional pain medicine at King’s College Hospital London in Dubai, believes that there are technological advances, which can take away the pain quickly and effectively without the need for steroid injections or surgery.

According to Dr Mohamed El Toukhy, it’s time to move on from steroids to treatments that can actually work long term. The pain clinic at King’s College Hospital in UAE, located at Dubai Hills is offering a new treatment called Radiofrequency Ablation.

The procedure provides long-lasting respite for people with chronic pain, particularly in the lower back, neck and knee joints. Radiofrequency ablation uses an electric current to heat up nerve tissue and disable nerves that are responsible for sending pain signals.

Dr Mohamed El Toukhy explains: “It is a relatively straightforward procedure and could be done under local anaesthetic or light sedation. The patient will be able to return home on the same day.

“After the procedure, patients can experience relief from pain that might have lasted anywhere from 12 months to even years. It is a very useful procedure for the right people.”
